Officials in the Dominican Republic recently installed over 500 cameras to monitor baggage handling across airports in the sun-soaked country as the tropical island gears up for a record-breaking winter.
Each month, the Dominican Republic welcomes more and more travelers as the Caribbean destination soars in popularity thanks to its excellent safety and strong international connectivity.
And with that popularity projected to continue growing, authorities want to make sure the Dominican Republic remains a safe destination. With that in mind, here’s what the country’s airports are doing to tackle crime.
Punta Cana Airport Ramps Up Security Ahead Of Busy Winter Season
Punta Cana International Airport remains by far the busiest in the country, handling over 8 million passengers per year. With so many inbound travelers flocking to the coastal destination each year – especially from affluent North American destinations – law enforcement agencies have ramped up efforts to deter criminals from targeting the highly-transited airport.
From new high-tech x-ray machines to sniffer dogs, officials from the state-run Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom) – the agency uncharged with the protection of the country’s airports – have shown an unwavering commitment to protecting tourists.

Over the past two years, the state agency has overseen the installation of over 500 cameras in airports across the Dominican Republic, many of which operate in Punta Cana airport.
The cameras have been deployed to monitor critical phases of the baggage handling chain; from the moment a passenger lifts their checked-in bags to the conveyor belt to the subsequent handling by security officials, each step of the process is now carefully monitored.

The move to add more security cameras comes as reports of luggage theft increase across the globe. But travelers in the Dominican Republic can expect top-tier safety, especially when it comes to busy aerial hubs like Punta Cana and Santo Domingo’s airports.
Although the Dominican Republic has seen its fair share of airport-related crimes – including forged travel documents, drug trafficking, and even corruption – the country remains one of the safest in Latin America.

In a press release issued by the country’s aviation officials, travelers are advised to report missing items or any suspicious activity to their airline, who will then file a formal complaint with authorities.
As the tropical island looks toward the looming winter season, travelers can expect to see a greater number of law enforcement personnel across the country’s airports. The Dominican Republic has one of the largest tourism police bodies in the Caribbean – the Politur – which maintains a visible presence in the country’s most popular destinations.
