Travelers visiting Punta Cana, the most popular destination in the Dominican Republic, will soon have a new and faster experience at Punta Cana’s International Airport. The General Directorate of Customs and the International Airport has presented last Friday with a new X-Ray scanner for less intrusive and more accurate baggage screening.

According to the information shared by the Dominican news outlet Diario Libre, the recent acquisition has been required by the new Customs law—enacted on August 09, 2021.

The cutting-edge machine is an ORION® 928DX and includes a Raspican system —an American technology specialized in machines for screening airport luggage and cargo— and includes a double generator for the visualization of images at a double angle (horizontal and vertical).

During the presentation of the new appliance, Customs General Director Eduardo Sanz Lovatón explained that with this new technology national security is ensured and that it will help combat illicit trades.

Frank Elías Rainieri, President and CEO of Grupo Punta Cana—a pioneer Dominican company in sustainable tourism—, highlighted that 60% of passengers visiting the Dominican Republic go through Punta Cana’s International Airport. Rainieri assured that with this new technology, travelers’ entry will be easier.

Punta Cana’s airport receives over 8 million tourists every year and local authorities are preparing for receiving even more international visitors. The current trends indicate that foreign travelers are interested in visiting the Dominican Republic and the government is taking multiple measures to facilitate tourism and grow as a top international destination.

About The New Scanner

The ORION® 928DX’s X-ray technology allows viewing through 35 millimeters into the steel. The scanner includes a comfortable low ramp that allows passengers to easily place their luggage before the scanning process.

With this new machine, offices will not have to manually revise traveler’s luggage and will accelerate the arrival process. Tired passengers will get to leave the airport sooner and start enjoying their vacation experience faster.

The new scanners specialize in explosives and narcotics detection. According to the official information shared by Raspican Systems, the model deployed at Punta Cana International Airport has been “designed to detect a wide range of explosives and narcotics respectively in real-time during the scanning process by marking a potential threat on the X-ray image”.

Also, organic materials will be easily detected and operators have the option of displaying the areas in pixel values. The high-quality images and the algorithm will provide relevant information for the officers and valuable tools to optimize the security system.
