Punta Cana Revealed As The Second Most Popular Destination For American Travelers This Winter

It is official: If you are heading to Punta Cana this winter, you are part of a massive movement.

According to the latest holiday travel report from AAA, Punta Cana has secured its spot as the #2 international destination for American travelers for the 2025-2026 winter season. The only destination beating it? The juggernaut that is Cancun, Mexico.

Punta Cana Revealed As The Second Most Popular Destination For American Travelers This Winter

Here at Dominican Republic Sun, we aren’t surprised. We have been watching the arrival numbers at Punta Cana Airport climb month after month. What used to be a “hidden gem” alternative to Mexico is now a heavyweight champion in its own right.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

AAA projects that 122.4 million Americans will travel this holiday season, a record-breaking figure that crushes pre-pandemic stats. When those travelers look outside the U.S. borders, they are overwhelmingly choosing the Caribbean and Mexico.

While Cancun took the gold medal, Punta Cana firmly holds the silver, beating out other major hotspots like London, Montego Bay, and Aruba.

This aligns perfectly with the data we are seeing from the Dominican Ministry of Tourism. The country has already welcomed over 8.5 million visitors in the first nine months of 2025. We are on track for a double-digit million year, a feat that Minister David Collado has rightly called “historic.”

Why Americans Are Choosing Punta Cana

So, why is everyone and their cousin booking a flight to PUJ? It comes down to three factors: Connectivity, Value, and Quality.

1. Unmatched Connectivity

You can’t visit a place you can’t get to. Punta Cana has aggressively expanded its air connectivity. As we recently covered, major carriers are adding direct routes from cities that never had them before. When you can fly non-stop from Indianapolis or Pittsburgh and be on the beach by 2:00 PM, the destination becomes a no-brainer.

2. The “All-Inclusive” King

Inflation is real. Americans are feeling it. Punta Cana remains the undisputed king of the high-value all-inclusive.

In other Caribbean destinations, a luxury week might cost you $7,000. In Punta Cana, you can often find a comparable 5-star experience for significantly less. Americans are value-conscious right now, and the DR delivers more bang for the buck than almost anywhere else in the hemisphere.

3. Safety and Modernization

The Dominican Republic has invested millions in infrastructure. The airport is modern and efficient—winning awards for a reason—and the main tourist corridors in Bavaro and Cap Cana are well-patrolled, well-lit, and incredibly safe for families.

4. On The Ground: Why Travelers Are Swapping Cancun for Punta Cana This Winter

Statistics and reports are one thing, but here at Dominican Republic Sun, we prefer to get our intel straight from the source—the beach chair.

We are currently on the ground in Punta Cana, soaking up the atmosphere (and the humidity) to see exactly who is visiting and why. While walking through the Breathless Punta Cana Resort & Spa this week, we caught up with Cheryl, a vacationer from Miami who represents a growing trend among American tourists: the “Value Migrant.”

For years, Cheryl and her family were loyal to the Mexican Caribbean. But this year, the math just didn’t add up.

The “20% Rule”

“I find Cancun is getting more expensive,” Cheryl told us while enjoying the pool scene at Breathless. “I can get the same holiday here [in Punta Cana] for usually 20 percent cheaper at least.”

This isn’t just anecdotal. As inflation squeezes travel budgets back home, the price-per-night difference between a 5-star all-inclusive in the Riviera Maya versus one in Bavaro has become a deciding factor.

“My family is on a budget,” Cheryl admitted, keeping it real. “Punta Cana gives me the best bang for my buck.”

The “Cancun vs. Punta Cana” Rivalry

Why is Cancun still #1? Simple: Geography and volume.

Cancun is a shorter flight for the West Coast and much of the Midwest. It also has a 40-year head start on brand recognition. But the gap is closing. As travelers look for alternatives to the crowded Mexican Caribbean, the Dominican Republic is catching the spillover.

If you are booked for Punta Cana this winter, expect company. The resorts will be full, the energy will be high, and the weather—as always—will be perfect.
