With millions of tourists expected to visit the Dominican Republic this year, Punta Cana stands out as the island’s most popular destination. A recent study published by the international travel insurance group Allianz revealed that Punta Cana is the 5th most popular summer destination this year for U.S tourists. Countless tourists head to the sunny island for a taste of its laid-back culture and abundant year-long sunshine. The Caribbean destination is home to some of the country’s best all-inclusive resort hotels, in addition to pristine beaches that stretch for miles.

Punta Cana beach

Punta Cana’s long coastline and endless white sand beaches make it the ideal location for a Caribbean getaway. With up to 62 miles of coastline, the area is home to some of the country’s most famous beaches, including Macao beach and the award-winning Juanillo beach. To the north of Punta Cana, tourists can enjoy Bávaro beach and its wide selection of tropical restaurants and bars. There are also plenty of lagoons where visitors can enjoy kayaking, snorkeling, and other outdoor activities.

Visitors can enjoy easy access to the area’s multiple beaches from some of the country’s top all-inclusive resorts. From the upscale Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana to the more affordable Royalton Splash Punta Cana, tourists have a lot to choose from.

For visitors who’d rather enjoy the area’s diverse nature, Punta Cana is a great location for ecotourism. This type of sustainable travel allows tourists to immerse themselves in local culture & wildlife. Excursions and guided tours are a safe bet, and Punta Cana contains a range of valleys, forests, and secluded lagoons that are perfect for those who want to avoid crowded beaches. Guided tours are a great way to do so, and some top locations include the Laguna Bavaro, a lagoon where tourists can fish, birdwatch, and swim in crystal-clear waters.

Another reason that attracts countless visitors to the sunny island is its year-round pleasant weather. Visitors can enjoy the warmest weather from May to October, with temperatures in the mid to high 80s. The slightly cooler months from November to March are almost as warm, with the average temperature in the lower 80s. Meanwhile, the daily low rarely dips below 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Tourists should be aware of the hurricane season, which can interrupt travel plans and damage property and infrastructure in the area. This year, the hurricane season is expected to arrive earlier than in previous years and bring unusually strong tropical storms. With up to 20 cyclones in the long-term forecast, travelers should be extra cautious in the months of June to November.

The Caribbean island has responded to the increased travel demand by building more hotels and is currently undergoing a construction boom. Punta Cana’s popularity makes it one of the most popular locations for new resorts. Of the approximately 16,000 hotel rooms being built in the country, up to 70% can be found in Punta Cana.

Beach tourists

With tourism back in full swing, the country’s tourism minister wants to build up to 25,000 new rooms to meet the unprecedented demand. This year, the Dominican Republic may welcome up to 7 million international tourists, and the travel industry is getting ready for a busy summer.

The city’s airport, Punta Cana International Airport, is the country’s largest. It handles up to 60% of the island’s international passenger traffic. As tourism in the country continues to pick up, authorities are working hard to expand the airport’s facilities. The airport is undergoing a large renovation in order to welcome more airline traffic and passengers. When completed later this year, the renovation will add 7 jet bridges as well as much-needed floor space.
