The Dominican Republic has begun building Port Cabo Rojo, a new massive cruise ship port in the Pedernales region. With construction set to last around 18 months, the project aims to create one of the leading cruise ship ports in the Caribbean. In addition to the new terminal, several new hotels will also be built.

Once complete in December 2023, the Port Cabo Rojo cruise ship terminal will have a maximum capacity of over a million cruise ship passengers per year. The project is an important step forward for the region, which is currently undergoing a larger tourism development plan to improve infrastructure and make travel to the region easier. With a modern and dynamic design, the port will be among the most advanced in the region.

The new cruise ship port will feature more than just piers. With entertainment and shopping being high on travelers’ lists, passengers will also find a spa and water park at Port Cabo Rojo. Shopping will also be a possibility at the new terminal, with several shops and restaurants included in the plan. Aiming to attract both locals and tourists, the huge project will transform the area’s tourism industry and revitalize the region.

The Pedernales region is undergoing a wider investment plan to improve its position as a tourism destination. Port Cabo Rojo occupies a central role in the strategy and will be key to welcoming more visitors. It is being built to handle large cruise ships and will contain the necessary infrastructure to process and maintain sizable vessels. Aside from the terminal, the port will have an intricate water waste management system.

The construction of the port and supporting infrastructure are divided into several phases. The first one includes building two piers as well as the terminal itself. Later on, the goal is to further expand the terminal and add an additional two piers. This week saw the first steps for the groundwork for the new port, as well as the laying of new water and sewage pipes. In total, the first phase is expected to take 18 months to complete.

Luis Abinader, the president of the Dominican Republic, oversaw the launch of the new terminal in the southern province of Pedernales. Valued at over 7 billion Dominican pesos, the port as well as new tourism infrastructure will help modernize the area’s tourism appeal and create up to five thousand new jobs in the region. With a private investment of $98 million U.S dollars, the new terminal will be an important source of economic growth.

The Dominican government wants the country to become a leading destination for cruise ship passengers. In that sense, the new Port Cabo Rojo in Pedernales will be key in transforming the country’s cruise ship infrastructure and surrounding industries. The country already enjoys a good climate, diverse tourist attractions, and unparalleled resort hotels, and Punta Cana was recently revealed to be one of the top destinations for U.S travelers.

Port in DR

An increasing number of passengers are visiting the Dominican Republic on cruise ships. In March alone, around 40 cruise ships docked in Dominican ports, and the number is expected to grow during the busy summer months. The industry is an important goal for the government, which wants to make the country a leading destination for cruise ship passengers in the Caribbean. It was recently announced that the country is aiming to build up to four new terminals for the growing cruise ship market. Moreover, the country will host an international cruise ship conference in September this year.
