One of Punta Cana’s most iconic 5-star resorts is temporarily closing for the season as it undergoes a huge makeover. Riu Palace Macao will reopen its doors to guests in November, offering even greater levels of service and luxury.
Punta Cana’s stunning array of luxury resorts often close for renovations to improve aging amenities, from rooms to massive outdoor pools.
Here’s the latest on Riu’s extensive renovation project and what travelers can expect from the renewed resort:
Riu To Spruce Up One Of Its Leading Caribbean Properties
Riu is one of the largest resort and hospitality chains in Punta Cana, with a handful of luxury all-inclusive properties. As travel numbers soar and more travelers flock to the coastal destination, Riu is temporarily closing its Palace Macao resort for an extensive makeover.
Situated on the idyllic shores of Playa Arena Gorda in the Macao resort neighborhood, Riu Palace Macao is a 5-star adults-only all-inclusive. With 360 spacious rooms and a beachside location that is hard to beat, the resort is one of the most popular in the city among adult travelers.
According to Riu, the massive resort will be closed for the summer while renovations are underway. The resort’s indoor and outdoor amenities will be completely redesigned to improve luxury, comfort, and service.
The huge resort features 7 distinctive room categories, from the compact Jr Suite Superior to the lavish Suites that feature impressive ocean and garden views. The makeover will further enhance the property’s luxury appeal by adding new high-tech features and modern touches to the decor and furnishings.

Riu is also redesigning the array of on-site amenities, with significant improvements to outdoor facilities such as its pools, bars, and entertainment options. Riu will be adding a brand new Sports Bar – Pepe’s Food – in addition to several new thematic restaurants to delight even the most demanding foodie travelers.
Travelers are increasingly seeking new experiences to make their vacation more memorable and unique, and to that end, Riu Palace Macao will offer a brand new mixologist bar alongside wine-tasting opportunities.
With a focus on local flavors and culture, Riu hopes to improve the guest experience by providing high-quality food and drink options that set it apart from the competition.

Guests will also be pampered thanks to a new cutting-edge spa complex that will feature state-of-the-art treatments and relaxing massages. The stunning resort currently features four outdoor pools as well as a private beach area that is ideal for soaking in the tropical heat.
One of the most exciting features of the renovation is the launching of the new Elite Club by Riu all-inclusive concept. Travelers that opt for the lavish new booking category can look forward to several exclusive perks, including a dedicated check-in lobby as well as access to Elite facilities.
Punta Cana’s Resort Scene Is Booming
Despite already being the most popular resort destination in the Dominican Republic, Punta Cana continues to attract new properties that stand out for being some of the most luxurious in the Caribbean.
Next year, Punta Cana will be home to the largest resort in the country, the 2,000-room Moon Palace Resort.
Inspired by the all-inclusive luxury resorts of Cancun, the giant property boasts some of the most impressive amenities in the region, from a golf course to its extensive selection of restaurants and outdoor facilities.
Meanwhile, other Punta Cana resorts are seeing costly renovations that will ensure that they remain competitive while offering world-class comfort to travelers.
