As of May 19th, Uber Select is now available to use on the Uber app in the Punta Cana area. This option offers travellers a premium ride in ‘high-end’ cars for up to 4 people at affordable prices.
This came into action after an agreement was signed on April 8th between Uber, the Dominican Confederation of Tourist Taxi Drivers (Codotatur), and affiliated companies, including Veron Taxi, Asotatupal and the National Association of Hotels and Tourism (Asonahores).
From this week onwards, Uber Select will be operated by driver-partners affiliated with Codotatur, which will contribute to increasing the GDP of the Dominican Republic. The sophisticated car service is set to operate through the Bavaro-Punta Cana region, allowing tourists to be dropped off and picked up at hotels and resorts.
The launch was praised by the Dominican Minister of Tourism, David Collado: “This service guarantees a more efficient service to tourists who visit the Eastern region”. Accompanying the launch of Uber Select, UberX will continue to be available for up to four passengers per ride.
Uber has been a ride-sharing app in the Dominican Republic since 2015, initially launching in Santo Domingo, Santiago and Puerto Plata. It has become incredibly popular with tourists visiting the country as there is no need to speak to a taxi operator over the phone, removing the language barrier that so many travellers fear when visiting a new country.
At a discussion of the launch, Uber’s public affairs manager for the Caribbean and Central America, Sylvia Alvarado stated: “The availability of Uber Select in Punta Cana is a reflection of our commitment to promoting the socio-economic development of the cities where we have a presence. It also enables drivers with more opportunities to generate additional revenue”.
Uber rides can also offer reduced fares when there is no heavy traffic and additional safety features, including an audio reminder to wear seatbelts and detection of unexpected route changes before the final destination. The majority of Uber cars in the Dominican Republic also offer air conditioning to keep travellers feeling cool in the hot sun.
Uber Select will allow travellers to visit multiple attractions in both style and comfort: with 8 beaches to explore in the Punta Cana region (including Bavaro Beach and Playa Blanca), vacationers have the freedom to travel between as many of them as desired and get back to their accommodation safely.
The new addition to the rideshare app will also be of use to travellers wishing to explore the new Katmandu Theme Park, set to open around fall 2022.
Uber Select can also pick up or drop off passengers arriving or departing from Punta Cana International Airport. Travellers who wish to return to their hotel after a night out will also be put at ease by the safety features that Uber Select has, ensuring a swift and secure journey.
Finally, Uber Select is particularly useful for international visitors who want to visit areas in Punta Cana that are situated away from their resort or hotel. For a traveller staying in accommodation in northern Punta Cana, it may be complicated to book a taxi to visit the Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve, or the Punta Espada Golf Club (both of which are located on the south coast of Punta Cana).
However, booking an Uber Select will eliminate this issue, allowing for stress-free travel to some of the best attractions Punta Cana has to offer.
In celebration of the new launch, users can apply the promotional code UBERSELECTPC in the Uber app and receive a 50% discount on their first trip with Uber Select, until May 28.
