American Airlines To Heavily Focus On Dominican Republic As International Travel Grows

The Dominican Republic has consistently grown in popularity since the full removal of COVID-19 travel restrictions. The Caribbean island nation is now officially one of the fastest-growing hotpots in the region according to new statistics, with over 10 million travelers expected to set foot in the warm country in 2023.

The island’s skyrocketing popularity has prompted a number of carriers to significantly increase flights to the growing hotspot. One of the most proactive carriers in announcing new nonstop routes to Punta Cana and beyond has been American Airlines.

With its modern fleet of over 980 short and long-haul aircraft, American Airlines is uniquely positioned to meet soaring travel demand to the Dominican Republic.

American Airlines recently announced a record number of flights to key international destinations this winter, including many in the Dominican Republic. The airline has said it will operate up to 400 daily flights to some 117 destinations around the world, including Punta Cana and Puerto Plata.

That number is a whopping 13% more than last year, which was already a record-breaking period for international travel.

The airline will heavily focus on warm tropical destinations, which tend to see the highest demand during the cold months between November and April. This winter, American Airlines will operate a record 85 weekly flights to Punta Cana, which remains the most attractive destination for U.S. travelers.

American Airlines will operate flights to Punta Cana from Miami, Charlotte, Dallas, and New York’s JFK Airport. Serving as key regional hubs, travelers will find it easier than ever before to fly to enjoy Punta Cana’s white-sand beaches and award-winning resorts.

In addition to Punta Cana, American has unveiled new flights to the growing culture and resort hotspot of Puerto Plata, where the airline will operate daily flights from Miami and Charlotte.

According to José María Giraldo, the airline’s general director for the Caribbean, American Airlines has operated flights to the sun-soaked destination for over 48 years. The carrier is now seeking to build on that historical legacy, with plans to continue to expand its presence in the popular destination.

American Airlines isn’t the only major carrier to bet heavily on the Dominican Republic. Other operators, including Delta and Jet Blue, have both announced plans to augment flights to the sunny hotspot. Jet Blue currently operates the largest network of flights to the Dominican Republic, with excellent connections from its key Boston and New York hubs.
