For decades, the “5-Star” rating system in the Caribbean has been broken. Every resort with a lobby chandelier and a swim-up bar claims to be luxury. But when everyone is “5-Star,” no one is.
That just changed.

The Michelin Guide—yes, the same one that awards stars to the world’s best restaurants—has officially launched its “Michelin Keys” for hotels. This is the new gold standard for hospitality, and out of the hundreds of resorts in the Dominican Republic, only two made the cut.
Here at The Dominican Republic Sun, we track every award, renovation, and opening in Punta Cana. We know the difference between marketing fluff and real exclusivity. These two properties aren’t just “nice”; they are in a league of their own.
If you are planning a trip for 2026 and want the literal best of the best, here is the breakdown of the only two Michelin Key holders in the country.
1. Eden Roc Cap Cana (2 Michelin Keys)
The Status: “An Exceptional Stay” The Vibe: Contemporary Classic & Lively
This is the heavy hitter. Eden Roc Cap Cana is currently the only hotel in the entire Dominican Republic to be awarded Two Michelin Keys.

If you are used to the “Relais & Châteaux” standard of service in Europe, this is where you go. Located in the ultra-exclusive gated community of Cap Cana, it feels less like a hotel and more like the French Riviera dropped into the Caribbean.
Why It Won:
- The “Private Pool” Standard: This isn’t a high-rise. The property is composed of boutique suites and villas, and almost every single one comes with its own private pool. You don’t fight for a chair here.
- The Food: Michelin inspectors care about food, and Eden Roc delivers. With Mediterranean-inspired dining and visiting celebrity chefs, the culinary program destroys the typical all-inclusive buffet model.
- The Villas: For the ultimate splurge, their multi-bedroom villas (some up to 4 bedrooms) are essentially private mansions with butler service.

The Price Tag (2026 Check): Exclusivity costs money. We checked rates for Spring 2026, and you should expect to pay between $1,700 – $1,900 USD per night for a standard Junior Suite with a pool.

2. Tortuga Bay Puntacana Resort & Club (1 Michelin Key)
The Status: “A Very Special Stay” The Vibe: Contemporary Classic & Tranquil
If Eden Roc is where you go to be seen, Tortuga Bay is where you go to disappear. Awarded One Michelin Key, this 30-room boutique hotel was designed by the late fashion icon Oscar de la Renta. It doesn’t scream “luxury” with gold plating; it whispers it with yellow villas and understated elegance.

The “Killer” Feature (VIP Service): The reason travelers choose Tortuga Bay over and over again is the arrival experience.
- The VIP Whisk: As a guest, you don’t wait in the immigration line. You are met at the plane, whisked through a VIP customs lane, and put into a private car. You can be in your villa 20 minutes after landing.
- The Golf Cart: Every room comes with a personal golf cart for your entire stay. You drive yourself to the Six Senses Spa, the La Cana Golf Club, or the secluded beaches of the Ecological Reserve.
The Price Tag (2026 Check): Tortuga Bay is slightly more “approachable” but still firmly in the 1% category. Rates for Spring 2026 are hovering around $1,200+ USD per night, depending on the villa size.
