It’s official: 2025 is the biggest year in the history of Dominican tourism, and Punta Cana is the engine driving the machine.
If you thought the airports felt busier this year, the data proves you were right.
According to the latest figures released by the Ministry of Tourism, the Dominican Republic has already shattered its own glass ceiling. From January to November 2025, the country welcomed a staggering 10,284,251 visitors—surpassing the 10-million milestone before the December rush even began.

And the vast majority of those travelers are heading to one place.
Statistics confirm that 62% of all air arrivals into the country this year landed at Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). That means roughly 6.3 million people have already passed through those thatch-roofed terminals in 2025, and the busiest days are still ahead.
The December Surge: 40,000 Passengers A Day
As we head into the final weeks of the year, the numbers are climbing even higher.
Giovanni Rainieri, the Airside Operations Director at Punta Cana International Airport, confirmed this week that December will be the absolute peak of this historic year.

“We are expecting to handle over 40,000 passengers per day for the remainder of the month,” Rainieri stated in a briefing with local press.
The airport projects it will move over 1 million passengers in December alone. To put that in perspective, that is roughly the entire population of Austin, Texas, moving through one airport in 31 days.
Why The Explosion?
The “11.5 Million” goal set by the government wasn’t just optimism; it was a calculation based on three shifting trends that we have tracked all year for those planning your trip to the island:

1. The “Safety” Shift While other Caribbean destinations struggled with negative headlines in 2025, the Dominican Republic maintained its Level 2 safety rating from the U.S. State Department. For families, the Resort Bubble of Punta Cana offers a predictable, secure environment that is winning over hesitant travelers.
2. The American Market Dominance The United States remains the undisputed king of Dominican tourism, accounting for 39% of all arrivals in November. But we are also seeing a massive surge from South America, with arrivals from Colombia (up 14%) and Argentina (up 23%) helping to fill the gaps left by the European market.

3. Infrastructure That Can Handle It The recent expansion of Terminal B at PUJ was critical. Without those new gates, processing 40,000 people a day would have been impossible. The airport is currently operating at maximum efficiency, handling more flights than any other hub in the Caribbean.
What This Means For Your Trip
If you are flying in for New Year’s, you are part of a record-breaking crowd. Here is the reality on the ground:
- Immigration Lines: With 40k daily passengers, the mid-day arrival window (11:00 AM – 3:00 PM) will be saturated.
- Traffic: The Boulevard Turístico plays host to every tour bus and transfer van in the region. Expect transfers to take 15-20 minutes longer than usual.
- The “Vibe”: The resorts will be at 100% occupancy. This means high energy, busy pools, and a need for dinner reservations.

The Bottom Line
2025 will go down as the year the Dominican Republic officially cemented its status as the Caribbean’s King. The records are being broken for a reason—the beaches are pristine, the people are welcoming, and the vibe is unmatched.
Just make sure you arrive prepared for the party. If you are still trying to decide on the perfect dates for your 2026 trip to avoid these mega-crowds, check our Month-by-Month Trip Planner to find the sweet spot between good weather and lower prices.
