5 Dominican Republic Resorts Reopening This Winter Following Hurricane Fiona

Several resorts in Punta Cana have announced updated reopening dates after they were partially damaged during Hurricane Fiona last month. The historic hurricane was the first to touch down in the Dominican Republic in over 18 years, and the destructive category 4 storm left over $375 million in damage, according to Dominican president Luis Abinader.

Five popular resorts in Punta Cana sustained varying levels of damage that forced doors to close directly following Hurricane Fiona while repairs took place. One month later, these properties have made enough progress to announce they will reopen for business this winter. In this article, we will break down the 5 resorts that have planned reopening dates, along with any information that has been made public regarding the status of repairs. 

Hilton La Romana Family and Adult Resorts

Family Resort Opening Date: November 1, 2022

Adults Only Resort Opening Date: November 20, 2022

The Hilton La Romana, which contains two resorts – one for families and one exclusive to adults, is popular among tourists and boasts multiple restaurants, water parks, a day spa, a dive center, and even a casino! The collective property sustained damage in multiple areas as a result of Hurricane Fiona. Roofs were damaged, and green areas were destroyed outside of the property and inside the resort machine rooms and kitchens were damaged by flooding. The property has announced separate dates of reopening, with the family resort opening on November 1st and the Adults only resort opening on November 20th. Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana

Opening Date: November 15, 2022

Located on the shores of Juanillo Beach, the Hyatt Zilara is an award-winning luxurious resort featuring infinity pools with swim-up bars, a water park, and a lazy river. The property also has 25 restaurants, a spa, and nightly entertainment. Although there has been no information given on the extent of the damage to the Hyatt Zilara, there was no structural damage report to the property, and it will reopen for guests on November 15th, less than two months after its initial closing. Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana

Opening Date: November 28th, 2022

Address: Playa Juanillo, Boulevard Zona Hotelera, Punta Cana 23302, Dominican Republic

The Hyatt Ziva offers various pools, bars, restaurants, beaches, and events, all contained within a luxurious gated enclave. The Resort also has close access to golf courses and offers deep-sea fishing excursions. The damage from Hurricane Fiona reported to the property was minor, including damage to landscaping, masonry, and small structures. Due to only minor damages, Ziva will be opening its doors to guests sooner than originally expected, with an updated reopening date of November 28th, 2022. Sanctuary Cap Cana

Opening Date: January 20th, 2023

Address: Boulevard Zona Hotelera, Punta Cana 23302, Dominican Republic

Sanctuary, the final property given an opening date, will not be opening to the public until January 20th, 2023 after previously giving an initial opening date of December 20th, 2022. It is currently unknown why the date has been pushed back, but it has been confirmed that there was no structural damage to the property.

When Sanctuary is reopened in 2023, guests can expect entertainment galore with daily activities such as yoga, beach volleyball, and Spanish classes and nightly activities such as themed dance parties and a live piano bar. Along with entertainment, Sanctuary has an additional “sanctuary town” located across from the hotel that has themed bars and restaurants with unique and authentic ambiances.
