These Are The 5 Biggest Mistakes When Booking Your Punta Cana All Inclusive Resort

Share The Article

Here at The Dominican Republic Sun, we see the same tragedy play out every single week.

A couple arrives in Punta Cana expecting a quiet, romantic week by the ocean. Instead, they end up in a hotel room that overlooks a construction site, fighting for a beach chair at 6:00 AM, and drinking watered-down rum out of a plastic cup.

The problem isn’t Punta Cana—it’s that you booked the wrong resort.

These Are The 5 Biggest Mistakes When Booking Your Punta Cana All Inclusive Vacation

There are over 80 all-inclusive properties on this coastline, and they are not created equal. If you are blindly clicking “Book Now” on Expedia because the photos look nice, you are gambling with your vacation.

These are the 5 biggest mistakes travelers make when choosing a resort—and how to make sure you book the right one.

1. Choosing The Wrong “Zone” (Waves vs. Calm)

This is the number one complaint we hear: “The beach was too rough to swim in.”

The Mistake: Assuming all Punta Cana beaches are the same.

Punta Cana Beach And Waves

The Reality:

  • Uvero Alto (North): This is where the newest, most luxurious resorts are (like Excellence, Breathless). However, the water here is rough. The waves are big, and the sand is golden, not white. If you want to float calmly with a drink in your hand, do not book here.
  • Bavaro (Center): This is the classic Caribbean postcard. White powder sand, turquoise water, calm swimming.
  • Cap Cana (South): Ultra-calm, shallow water with zero waves.

The Fix: If you are a “pool person,” Uvero Alto is fine. If you are an “ocean swimmer,” stick to Bavaro or Cap Cana.

2. Getting Catfished By “Ocean View”

You see a room category called “Junior Suite Ocean View” for $500 less than “Ocean Front.” You think you found a deal.

The Mistake: Thinking “Ocean View” means you will see the ocean from your bed. The Reality: In Punta Cana, resorts are massive. “Ocean View” is a technical term that means if you stand on a chair on your balcony and crane your neck 45 degrees to the left, you can see a sliver of blue water 800 yards away behind a palm tree.

The Fix: If seeing the waves is non-negotiable for you, you must book “Ocean Front” (sometimes called “Beachfront”). Anything else is likely a view of the pool or a garden.

3. “Cheaping Out” On The Club Upgrade

At most hotels in the US, the “Club Level” is a scam. It’s just free pretzels and a coffee machine.

The Mistake: Carrying that mindset to Punta Cana and skipping the upgrade (Preferred Club, Diamond Club, Excellence Club, The Reserve). The Reality: At a mega-resort with 1,000 rooms, the Club upgrade is essential. It is the only way to get:

  • A Private Beach Area: Where you don’t have to fight for a chair at sunrise.
  • Premium Liquor: Name-brand spirits (Tito’s, Tanqueray) instead of the local “rotgut” that gives you a hangover by noon.
  • A La Carte Breakfast/Lunch: Skipping the chaotic main buffet for a quiet, table-service meal near the ocean.

The Fix: If the price difference is less than $50/night, buy the upgrade. It saves your sanity.

4. Ignoring The “Mega-Resort” Layout

You book a resort because it has 15 pools and 20 restaurants.

The Mistake: Not realizing that your room in the “Garden Section” is a 10-minute walk from the beach. The Reality: Properties like Bahia Principe, Grand Palladium, and Hard Rock are effectively small cities. If you book the cheapest room category, you are often placed in the lobby block, which is FAR from the ocean. You will spend half your vacation waiting for the little golf cart tram to pick you up.

Punta Cana Hard Rock

The Fix: Look at the Resort Map before you book. If you have mobility issues (or just hate walking in humidity), book a “Beach Side” room or choose a compact resort (like Iberostar Grand) where everything is 5 minutes away.

5. Playing “Renovation Roulette”

Punta Cana is currently in a massive construction boom. Older hotels (built in the 90s) are frantically renovating to compete with the new luxury builds in Miches.

The Mistake: Booking a “Classic” resort without checking the construction schedule.

The Reality: Nothing ruins a nap like a jackhammer at 8:00 AM. Many travel agencies won’t explicitly warn you that the main pool is closed or that Block 4 is being gutted.

Cheap rooms are often 20 minutes from the beach. Check the resort map or book “Beach Side” to save your feet.

The Fix: Before you pay, go to TripAdvisor and filter reviews by “Newest.” If anyone mentions construction, noise, or closed restaurants in the last 2 weeks, pick a different hotel. It’s also wise to check the official website for your hotel as they often post a small disclaimer banner near the top.
