Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, international travel has been up in the air. Many tourists are worried about catching the virus whilst flying to new destinations, or getting stuck in a different location due to a national lockdown.

2022 presents a different story: with more people vaccinated against the virus than ever before, international travel is becoming an option again for those in need of a getaway. Airbnb has reported that guests have already planned to stay in over 72,000 cities and towns this summer.

Santo Domingo Town Centre

With so many options to choose from, it can be hard to select a destination that ticks all the boxes. What location encompasses beaches, a national park, a colonial city, multiple museums and traditional eateries and bars?

Look no further than Santo Domingo – rated by Airbnb as the 8th most searched destination by American guests internationally in 2022.

Travellers can expect anything and everything in the bustling capital city of the Dominican Republic: for a taste of traditional Latin American culture, visitors should head to Zona Colonial. With cobblestone streets, century-old structures and stunning classical art, a walk in this area of this city will take any traveller back in time. Classed as a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1990, the city’s colonial district is a must-see attraction, with the oldest buildings dating back to the 16th century.

There are also multiple cafes, restaurants and bars that are a short stroll away, as well as the Ambar Museum and Chocolate Museum.

The report from Airbnb has also found that half of all nights booked with the rental company for summer 2022 are within 3 miles of the coast, including properties in the Dominican Republic: Boca Chica Beach and Playa de Guibia Beach are both located in the Santo Domingo municipality, boasting crystal clear waters and soft white sand. Travellers looking to top up their tan are invited to relax on the multiple hammocks and deckchairs lining the coast, with a host of eateries in close proximity.

For the most adventurous travellers choosing to visit Santo Domingo, the 3 Eyes National Park is a must-see attraction. Located 10 minutes from the Zona Colonial, this nature reserve contains an open-air limestone cave system with crystal clear natural lakes. Tours of the park are available, but travellers are also able to explore the area by themselves.

As expected from such a vibrant and exciting city, there are multiple unique Airbnbs to host any and every traveller.

Airbnb house

From chic studio apartments with roof terraces to vintage builds, condos and even a loft house with a private pool, Airbnb has accommodation for any number of travellers wishing to explore the capital.

Whilst Santo Domingo is a haven for solo travellers and couples looking for an adventurous time, there are plenty of family-friendly options for attractions in the city.

One such example is the Malecon De Santo Domingo: officially titled ‘George Washington Boulevard’, it includes the Plaza Juan Baron and Guiba seafront parks, perfect for a walk with a view of the sea with plenty of refreshments on hand to keep little ones occupied. For families who are able to travel slightly outside of the beach area, there is also the Kahkow Experience, where people of all ages can make their own chocolate bar.

For travellers who are looking to stay in the capital city without an Airbnb, there are nearly 8000 hotel rooms available – all of which are open for bookings in the upcoming summer season. Whether you are looking for a relaxing beach vacation, an adventurous excursion, or simply want to taste some of the best food in the Caribbean, Santo Domingo has something for everyone.
