Punta Cana Airport Among Best In The World For Passenger Experience According To New Ranking

Share The Article

The press releases are officially rolling in: Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) has just been named one of the best airports in the world for passenger experience by the Airports Council International (ACI World).

Snagging the “Best Airport at Departures” title for the Latin America and Caribbean region in the 2025 ASQ Awards, PUJ is taking a victory lap for the ninth time.

While most global airports are soulless, fluorescent-lit boxes designed to induce anxiety, PUJ greets you with open-air thatched-roof terminals and a warm tropical breeze. It is an airport that fundamentally understands you are on vacation the second your tires hit the tarmac.

That being said, handling massive volumes of international travelers means things can still get chaotic if you aren’t prepared. The awards are completely well-deserved, especially given the recent technological upgrades at the border, but knowing how to seamlessly navigate the terminals is what separates the stressed-out rookies from the seasoned Caribbean travelers.

Arrival: Beating the Resort Crowds

Stepping off the plane at PUJ is an immediate sensory shift. Instead of sterile, enclosed jet bridges, you are often greeted by the warm Caribbean heat and the sight of sprawling, open-air pavilions topped with dried palm fronds.

It is a stunning architectural nod to traditional Dominican design that instantly puts you in a tropical mindset. However, the sheer volume of arriving flights dumping passengers into the hall at the same time means that relaxed feeling can evaporate quickly if you get caught in the wrong line.

  • The Trap: Getting off your flight and realizing you forgot to fill out the mandatory Dominican Republic electronic entry form, forcing you to scramble on your phone using airport Wi-Fi while 300 people pass you in the immigration line.
  • The Reality: PUJ’s recent investments in automated passport e-gates have drastically cut down wait times, which heavily contributed to their high customer satisfaction scores. However, the machines only work if your digital paperwork is already in the system.
  • The Fix: Fill out the free DR E-Ticket online 72 hours before your flight, take a screenshot of the QR code, and save it to your phone’s favorites. You will breeze right past the frantic families and straight to the baggage carousel.

Departure: Turning Transit into a Resort Extension

The contrast between arriving and departing at Punta Cana is striking, especially if you fly out of the newer Terminal B. This side of the airport swaps the rustic palapas for sleek, air-conditioned modernity, featuring expansive duty-free shopping zones and high-end dining options that rival major North American hubs. It is built to keep you spending and relaxing right up until boarding, extending your vacation until the absolute last minute.

  • The Trap: Showing up three hours early for your flight home and spending your final vacation moments cramped at a crowded gate, staring at the clock.
  • The Reality: PUJ won the “Best at Departures” award for a reason. Terminal B is a masterpiece of modern tropical design, and they have invested heavily in keeping travelers relaxed rather than rushed.
  • The Fix: Gain access to the Terminal B VIP Lounge. Whether you buy a day pass or use your Priority Pass, you get fast-track security, an open bar, solid food options, and access to an outdoor infinity pool overlooking the runway. It is the ultimate insider flex to watch your plane pull up to the gate while you take one last dip.

Ground Transport: Escaping the Taxi Hustle

Once you finally clear customs and grab your bags, the real test begins just beyond the sliding glass doors. The arrivals curb is a vibrant, loud bottleneck of tour operators, taxi dispatchers, and resort representatives holding a sea of signs. The cacophony of shouting and the overwhelming rush of the crowd can easily disorient tired travelers who just want to get to their resort.

  • The Trap: Walking out of the pristine arrivals hall directly into the chaotic swarm of aggressive taxi touts and timeshare salesmen eagerly waiting beyond the sliding glass doors.
  • The Reality: The actual airport experience might be five stars, but the immediate curbside hustle is still a wild ride if you don’t know exactly where you are going.
  • The Fix: Never wing your airport transfer. Pre-book a private, reputable transport service before you land. Your driver will be waiting outside with a sign, allowing you to walk straight past the gauntlet of shouting vendors and straight into an air-conditioned SUV.

The Bottom Line

Punta Cana Airport absolutely deserves its crown. By blending authentic Dominican hospitality with high-end, modern efficiency, PUJ has created a blueprint for what a leisure airport should be.

As long as you handle your E-Ticket in advance and pre-book your ground transportation, your passage through the Caribbean’s busiest hub will be every bit as relaxing as the vacation itself.

Absolute rubbish. Worst airport in the world. Luggage locks broken, suitcases rifled through and items stolen. Why is this allowed to happen constantly at Punta Cana airport. Never lock cases if arriving at Punta Cana or the locks will be smashed off. They do not possess the international keys to open cases, just smash the locks. This is presumably because cases are searched illegally by baggage staff.
