There is no end in sight to the international appetite to visit the Dominican Republic, and Punta Cana Airport is struggling to cope with passenger numbers. Earlier this year, authorities were eager to announce a new, $280 million dollar expansion to support passenger infrastructure in the busy airport, which already receives more traffic than its other Dominican counterparts. The airport enjoys upwards of 300 international routes, a figure which is expected to grow once the renovation is complete.
With the opening set for November this year, the major airport expansion will bring in more passengers, open up new routes to U.S airports, and improve tourism infrastructure in the wider Punta Cana region. The renovation will add 7 news boarding bridges, allowing for upwards of 3 million new passengers to travel through the airport. Punta Cana is already a major tourism hotspot, a major factor in helping the Dominican Republic reach pre-pandemic tourist arrivals.
Construction of the new Terminal B is well underway, and will also include a new logistics and maritime trade center. With an additional 260,000 sq feet of surface area, traveling to Punta Cana Airport will be more comfortable and convenient than ever before. The Dominican Republic has seen strong growth in international travel, with Punta Cana seeing some of the highest passenger numbers. With more demand, airlines from across North America are eager to announce new flights to the sunny island. Hotels, too, are benefiting from the increased demand, and many of them are investing in new ecotourist alternatives that help preserve local nature & cultural sights.
Travelers can expect a number of benefits thanks to the ongoing projects. The current developments will bring new hotels to the region in a response to increased travel demand. According to Frank Elias Raineri, president of the Punta Cana Group, the goal is to build up to 15,000 new hotel rooms in the region over the course of a few years. Moreover, the new Terminal B will house U.S Customs pre-clearance services, making travel easier than ever before.
The Dominican Republic Civil Aviation Board has announced several new flight connections to popular North American destinations. This is especially good news for passengers from the U.S, who will be delighted to see more routes connecting the Dominican Republic to the American market. The new routes include the Philadelphia – Punta Cana, to be operated four times per week with Spirit Airlines starting 18th May. The low-cost airline already serves a number of U.S cities, including Miami and Orlando.
New Logistics Centre On The Way
As part of the $280 million overhaul, a new logistics and maritime center – the Punta Cana Free Trade Zone – is also being built. Once complete, the upgraded facilities will allow for the handling of more goods and services across the region. This is also good news for the local economy, which will generate up to 7,000 new jobs in the area. The Dominican president Luis Abinader recently noted that “today, the Dominican Republic is attracting more international investment than ever before”
In order to create a more dynamic and internationalized economy, the government wants to help attract foreign investment into Punta Cana. The government, headed by Luis Abinader, is calling for a new investment strategy, minimizing bureaucracy and cutting down on red tape. This is part of the government’s liberal, pro-trade strategy, which has seen a number of investment programs being carried out across the tropical island in recent months.
