There is no end in sight to the international appetite to visit the Dominican Republic, and Punta Cana Airport is struggling to cope with passenger numbers. Earlier this year, authorities were eager to announce a new, $280 million dollar expansion to support passenger infrastructure in the busy airport, which already receives more traffic than its other Dominican counterparts. The airport enjoys upwards of 300 international routes, a figure which is expected to grow once the renovation is complete.

With the opening set for November this year, the major airport expansion will bring in more passengers, open up new routes to U.S airports, and improve tourism infrastructure in the wider Punta Cana region. The renovation will add 7 news boarding bridges, allowing for upwards of 3 million new passengers to travel through the airport. Punta Cana is already a major tourism hotspot, a major factor in helping the Dominican Republic reach pre-pandemic tourist arrivals.

Construction of the new Terminal B is well underway, and will also include a new logistics and maritime trade center. With more demand, airlines from across North America are eager to announce new flights to the sunny island. Moreover, the new Terminal B will house U.S Customs pre-clearance services, making travel easier than ever before.

The Dominican Republic Civil Aviation Board has announced several new flight connections to popular North American destinations. This is especially good news for passengers from the U.S, who will be delighted to see more routes connecting the Dominican Republic to the American market. The new routes include the Philadelphia – Punta Cana, to be operated four times per week with Spirit Airlines starting 18th May. The low-cost airline already serves a number of U.S cities, including Miami and Orlando.
