That’s great news for Canadian travelers, who can look forward to more availability and flexibility when it comes to flying to one of their favorite Caribbean destinations this year.

Canadians have been flocking to the Dominican Republic in droves for decades, and this year, they’re projected to do so in record numbers.

While the whole country is a hotspot for Canadians, resort hotspots like Punta Cana, Samaná, and La Romana top the charts as some of the preferred destinations.

With growing demand, several Canadian airlines have announced new flights as well as more frequencies to popular Dominican Republic resort hubs.

Air Canada, the country’s air carrier, has said it plans to increase the availability of flights by 11% compared to last year, especially to Caribbean destinations like the Dominican Republic.

The airline has increased the frequency of its Ottawa-Punta Cana route from 2 to 4 weekly flights, whereas Toronto residents can now fly to Punta Cana 14 times per week compared to just 10 last year. Meanwhile, the Montreal to Puerto Plata flight is operated once weekly.

Canada’s largest airline is also launching a new winter Montreal-La Romana route with a weekly departure starting December 17, 2023. La Romana is emerging as one of the leading hubs for luxury travel in the Dominican Republic, boasting several renowned resorts such as Casa de Campo, which recently received a massive upgrade with its lavish new villas.

The new route will operate throughout the peak of the winter season, coinciding with the busiest period for Canadian travel as temperatures drop and travelers head south in search of warmer weather.

Meanwhile, Flair Airlines has also announced the launching of a new direct route from Toronto to Punta Cana starting this October. The much-welcomed news means Toronto residents will have even more affordable options at their disposal for flights to the Dominican Republic this year – the perfect opportunity for a fall getaway.

Flair Airlines will operate a daily flight to the sun-soaked destination from Toronto, ensuring enough availability for Canadian travelers during the peak of the winter season.

The low-cost airline is one of the largest in Canada, operating an extensive network of flights to popular destinations. Competing with the likes of Transat and Sunwing Airlines, Flair is a great option for those looking for bargains. As with all low-cost carriers, travelers will have to factor in things like luggage and onboard extras like legroom or pre-booked meals.

According to Stephen Jones, CEO of Flair Airlines, the Caribbean is one of the fastest-growing hubs for Canadian travel. “The Dominican Republic is a leading destination for Canadians who seek to escape the cold winters in search of virgin beaches and a vibrant culture,” the executive said in a statement.

Flair has also said it is planning to launch a non-stop Ottawa – Punta Cana route later this year, although it hasn’t announced an official date yet.

Canadian travel to the Dominican Republic is growing at a record pace, with nearly a million Canadians expected to flock to the sun-soaked island this year. After the United States, Canada is the second-largest market for inbound travel in the Dominican Republic, and all major Canadian airlines operate flights to the Caribbean nation.
