Punta Cana International Airport has just been awarded a major accolade after winning the title of the best medium-sized airport in Latin America and the Caribbean by Airports Council International.

The distinction is a testament to ongoing efforts to transform Punta Cana’s airport into a leading aerial hub capable of handling over 10 million passengers per year.

This week, AIC, a leading international aviation organization, handed Punta Cana International Airport the title of the best medium-sized airport in the region for the seventh consecutive year.

The airport came out on top for airports that handle between 5 to 15 million passengers annually, although the airport is well on its way to welcoming over 10 million tourists.

American Airlines, Delta, and Air Canada are just a few of the many North American airlines that are ramping up flights to Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic this winter.

Canada and the Dominican Republic signed a new Open Skies Treaty in February this year, allowing Canadian airlines to directly negotiate new routes to the tropical island. A similar agreement is in the works with the United States and has the backing of the country’s travel industry.
