Hurricane Fiona devastated the Caribbean when it made landfall in September of 2022. The category 4 storm wreaked havoc, causing millions of dollars in damage and displacing thousands of people from their homes. One of the hardest hit by the hurricane was the Dominican Republic, as it made landfall and ravaged the eastern part of the country. According to President Luis Abinader, the damages exceeded 20 billion pesos or over $375 million U.S. dollars.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic’s top tourism destination, was severely affected by the storm. Several resorts and beaches had to be closed due to damages and infrastructure, such as roads being damaged in the city. 2 months later, progress in cleanup has been made, and many hotels have recently reopened after long closures to fix the mess that Hurricane Fiona left behind.
