Anticipating ever-growing arrivals, officials decided to invest over $90 million to renovate Punta Cana’s aging Terminal B, adding much-needed high-tech systems to make travel more comfortable, safe, and efficient.
The renovation took over a year to complete, and the new terminal began operating officially on June 30. In that time, it has handled more than 60 flights carrying nearly 18,000 passengers, a fraction of what’s to come.
And most importantly, the airport has opened the doors to one of the most modern and efficient aerial hubs in the Caribbean.

Terminal B handles most international flights, including the lion’s share of those operating from strategic North American destinations.
The brand-new terminal is a watershed moment for the city and an opportunity to showcase the government’s commitment to make Punta Cana the premier Caribbean destination.
Punta Cana International Airport welcomes more than 8 million travelers each year, most of whom travel through Terminal B. The renewed terminal now houses a set of ultra-modern electronic systems intended to make travel a breeze.
The massive renovation has introduced self-check-in gates, electronic immigration checks, as well as 10 state-of-the-art body scanners, making this the most advanced airport in Latin America, according to local sources.
Additionally, travelers can now check in their bags without the help of airline agents, thanks to the terminal’s new smart path biometric system. The airport’s gates also feature electronic boarding systems, which are designed to speed up the boarding process and allow for more efficient and timely departures.
As expected, Terminal B boasts a contemporary design with light pastel colors that ensure calm even during the peak of the winter season. With a variety of new bars, cafes, and restaurants, travelers have a greater choice of top-rated eateries, not to mention new shops and other travel services.
The renovation also takes note of Punta Cana’s remarkable growth in the luxury travel segment. The terminal’s new VIP lounge features cutting-edge amenities – including an indoor poor – a food truck, as well as expansive views of the tarmac and surrounding tropical scenery.
Officials have also invested in new security systems to build on Punta Cana’s excellent track record in providing unparalleled safety for travelers. A new Explosive Detection System (EDS), as well as a host of more intricate systems, will make this one of the safest airports in the world.
Punta Cana Airpot has always stood out as one of the most innovative aerial hubs in the region since opening in 1983. The first privately-run airport in the world, Punta Cana International Airport has grown at a steady pace ever since.
Nowadays, the airport operates flights to 64 cities across 26 countries, making it one of the best-connected airports in the Caribbean. Punta Cana International Airport has been awarded the title of the best medium-sized airport in the Caribbean and Latin America for several years in a row.
